Your agent tries Google and hits a CAPTCHA. It checks LinkedIn and gets blocked. It scrapes a directory and burns its IP instantly. The logic is fine, but the network identity is dead on arrival. Most builders quickly learn a hard truth. An agent without a proxy isn't autonomous at all.

The internet does not trust cloud IPs

Most agents start in the cloud. You spin up a server and start browsing. It looks clean on paper, but in reality, sites scrutinize cloud IPs heavily. Data center ranges scream "bot traffic." When your agent shows up, sites block it before your workflow even begins.

Builders panic and bolt on stealth plugins, patched browsers, and cookie workarounds. They think they have a browser problem. They actually have an IP problem.

A spare laptop is a clever hack, not the full answer

Many builders eventually try routing tasks through a home MacBook or mini PC. It feels brilliant because it works. The setup looks normal to target sites, with a real residential IP and user environment.

For a solo dev, this gets you unstuck. But it breaks down quickly. Your home machine is a single exit point. An agent needs many. A laptop in your living room cannot switch geographies, segment identities by task, or recover automatically when an IP gets burned.
